After graduating and working as a free-lance historian, Blainey became Professor of Economic History in 1968 and Ernest Scott Professor of History in 1977. He has been a member of and presided over numerous public bodies and is the author of many publications, chiefly in the field of Australian History. Blainey also has a high public profile in the media and since 1974 has been a regular columnist for various newspapers and journals, including "The Age", "Melbourne Herald", "The Australian" and "Australian Business Monthly".
