Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsTannersRetailersHistoryShortly after his arrival in Melbourne in 1853, Moritz Michaelis established a business Michaelis & Boyd importing cotton & other cloths, spirits, & groceries; it was wound up in 1866. In 1866 Michaelis Hallenstein & Co was formed and the firm grew rapidly through a complex series of partnerships, eventually operating in all Australian states (except Tasmania) and New Zealand. The firm reformed as a limited liability company in 1892, converting to a private company in 1897. To bring the five companies then in the Group under a common management Associated Leathers Ltd was established as a holding company in 1949. During its later years the firm manufactured leathers, venetian and other blinds and canvas products and wholesaled toys, saddlery, travel goods, grindery and hardware. The business was reformed as Michaelis Bayley Ltd.
