After working in various German and Swiss Universities he moved to London in 1937 where he was employed in research at the Royal Institution. In the following year Boas migrated to Australia and was appointed Carnegie lecturer in Metallurgy at the University Of Melbourne and in 1940 senior lecturer in Physical Metallurgy. In 1947 he became Principal Research Officer in the Division of Tribophysics at the CSIRO and two years was promoted as the Chief of Division. Walter Boas retired in 1969 and became Honorary Senior Associate in Metal Physics at the University of Melbourne.
