He graduated BA & MA in the University of Melbourne in history and social work. He took his PhD in history in 1983. Mitchell tutored and lectured in history and was secretary to the University Assembly from 1975 to 1978. He worked in the University Counselling Service as assistant director and acting director 1986-1996 and as Disability Liaison Officer 1985 to 1990. He also held office in the Ormond College Students' Club 1968 to 1970. He has written a number of works including "A deepening roar: Scotch College, Melbourne, 1851-2001"
