Funds were obtained from Doncare and from donations. In 1980-1981 the refuge acquired funds through government grants and became an autonomous organisation.
Brenda House was set up to be a women's refuge run by women for women and children in a non-hierarchical collective model. Its purpose was to provide safe and secure short-term support and accommodation for lone women and women with children who were victims of domestic violence. It provided support in a non-institutional setting in which women's experiences were validated and women are empowered to make positive and informed decisions about their futures. It became Brenda House Collective Incorporated in 1994. In June 2012, Brenda House merged with Maroondah Halfway House to form the Safe Futures Foundation.Search records of this agent
