In 1816 he was apprenticed to a London merchant and was later employed by the Levant Company until it failed in 1825. During the following year, Brown went to Colombia and remained there until 1841. In 1852 he sailed to Australia to set up the Melbourne office of a gold mining company. It was a shortlived enterprise and Brown was back in London two years later and then returned to South America as a bank manager. He died in London in 1874.
