From 1924 until 1939 he worked for companies as a commercial lawyer, but being warned by an employee (a gauleiter) that he was in danger of arrest, he and his wife fled to Australia, where they arrived in August 1939. Unable to practice law in Australia, Muller bought a confectionary shop in Ivanhoe which he kept until retirement in 1972.
