After studying medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, and at the University of Liege, he was admitted M.R.C.S. of London in 1841, and M.D of St Andrews in 1846. After practicing as a physician in London, Dr. Brownless arrived in Victoria in December 1852 and was appointed Physician to the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. In 1854 he became the Physician to the Melbourne Hospital where he remained working until his retirement in 1856 and was appointed Life Governor and Consulting Physician. In June 1855, Brownless was given the Diploma of M.D. by the University of Melbourne (the first time the University conferred the degree) and soon founded the medical school. From 1858 to 1887, Brownless was annually elected Vice Chancellor of the University. In 1887 he succeeded Dr. Moorhouse and was appointed Chancellor. Brownless died in 1897.
