After serving in New Guinea during World War II, he lived in London and Prague for several years before returning to Australia. Murray-Smith was a member of the Communist Party for thriteen years and active in many organisations, including the Australian Peace Council and the Melbourne Realist Writers' Group. In 1954 he founded the magazine 'Overland', which he edited until his death in 1988. He was a Reader in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne for many years and edited the journal, 'Melbourne Studies in Education'. He also wrote and edited many works of Australian letters and history.
