It was a committee opposed to the F18 freeway - a proposed extension of the Eastern Freeway linking Burke Road to Greensborough, along the river valley. Under Bunbury's presidency, the V.F.A.G. was successful and the designated area was made into park land. Alan Bunbury was later Chair of the Middle Yarra Advisory Council, which functioned as an advisory group to the Board of Works on parklands and development. In addition to Alan and Anne Bunbury's avid interest and efforts in conservation, they were prominent identities of the Heidleberg Repertory Group.
