He also served the society in a number of roles including as a long-time committee member, as president, and producing the society's newsletter, Search, for 16 years. During this time he has also contributed to Coburg heritage conservation and interpretation projects. From 2007, he also joined the Waverley Historical Society, organised the society's newsletter, researched and wrote articles about local history and compiled abstracts relating to its local history from Sands and McDougall directories. Burchell has written and published a number of books on victorian school architecture, house styles, and on Coburg's local history. His 1991 publication, Recognising House Styles 1880s-1990s included a foreword written by Professor Miles Lewis of the University of Melbourne's Architecture Department. Burchell and Lewis corresponded until 2002 about architectural history. Lewis contributed a foreword to a later book, Halls of Learning, and appeared as a guest speaker at Coburg Historical Society events. In 2014 the Royal Historical Society of Victoria recognised Burchell's work with the Coburg and Waverley historical societies with an award of merit.
