The group were concerned about issues of specific interest to students and also in areas of broad community concern. By 1970 the group were a dominant presence on nineteen Australian campuses and fought to abolish student fees and organise student travel. Two years later the A.U.S. were powerful opponents of conscription and by 1975 they campaigned for womens' rights and established A.U.S. Women.
