His son, Lieutenant Villars Butler saw action in New Zealand in 1863-64 before returning to Ireland. Villar's cousin, Walter, arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and worked in the Customs Department before joining the Gold Warden's office at Beechworth in 1856.
