From 1965-1970 he was a Catholic priest within the Archdiocese of Melbourne and became interested in the anti-Vietnam war movement. He was an organiser of the Victorian committee of the Vietnam Moratorium Campaign in 1970 and later continued as a lay person within this and related movements. In the 1970s he married Mary Doyle with whom he has two children. His interests continue to be the history of Christianity in Australia, Australia Vietnam relations, and the history of the Irish in Australia. He has published many newsletters and articles on these topics.
