This resulted in the passing the Dentists Act 1887. The Act provided for the registration of dentists and the establishment of a Dental Board. The Board was to maintain a register of dentists. The Act also provided for the training of dentists and an examination for dentists. To assist in the training of Dentists the Society was instrumental in helping establish the Dental Hospital. Members gave their services free of charge to proved dental care for the poor. Some members also gave their time to provide education and training for dental students. The Society continued in existence until about 1920 when it merged with the Australian College of Dentistry Alumni Society. The new Society merged with the Dental Graduates Society in 1922 to form the State Dental Society of Victoria.
