Her father raised her as a boy and at the age of four she was giving swimming demonstrations for the Royal Lifesaving Society to inspire people to learn to swim. At University High School she became Senior Prefect and Sports Captain. She went to Melbourne Teachers' College and taught in schools from 1931. In 1950 Oke helped establish the Union of Australian Women and advocated for equal pay and equal opportunity. She also helped form a branch of the Aboriginal Advancement League, ensuring it was chaired by an aboriginal woman. A founding member of the Older Women's Network, Oke was included in the Victorian Women's Honour Roll in recognition of her achievements in 2002.
