Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsTrade UnionsHistoryOperative Bakers established an industrial organisation in 1862 and assumed the name Operative Bakers' Society of Victoria in 1888. The union joined the Baking Trade Employees Federation of Aust. in 1914, but broke with the federal body after the war and reformed as the Operative Bakers' Union of Vic. The major industrial issues tackled by the Union has been the campaign to shorten hours and to limit baking to six days. At least two attempts have been made to establish formal links with Victorian Bread Carters, despite the connections the organisational structures have remained separate. In 1975 the Operative Bakers' Union amalgamated with the Pastrycooks to form the PBBATU.
