Ord, graduate of the University of Queensland, spent the years 1954-61 as an officer (Captain later Major) in the Australian Psychology Corps. In 1957 he went ot New Guinea to develop tests suitable for non-literate people to reduce wastage among recruits in the Pacific Islands Regiment. The P.I.R. Test (a battery of five non-verbal tests, individually administered) resulted. From 1961 to 1971 he was Chief Psychologist, Department of Public Service Board, Port Moresby, developing psychological services for PNG from their inception, including aptitude and attainment testing in which he retained interest. He left PNG in 1970, taking up appointments at the University of Waikato.
