She was educated at a Russian secondary school in Harbin, Manchuria, the Commercial High School, Brisbane, and the University of Queensland. After some years as senior mistress at St Aidan's Girls' School and tutor at the Women's College, Brisbane, she was appointed tutor at the University of Melbourne's Extension Board, and then founding lecturer in Russian. In 1946 she established the University's Dept. of Russian Language and Literature which she headed until 1977. She was guest lecturer at Oxford and Moscow, founded and edited 'Melbourne Slavonic Studies' was on the executive committee on the International Slavists' Association and other scholarly bodies, spearheaded studies into Russians in Australia and published articles on pedagogy, Tolstoy and Pushkin in scholarly journals. Loved and admired equally for her scholarship, inspirational teaching and her warmth, kindness and generosity, Nina Christesen died on August 8, 2001.
