After teaching history at Knox Grammar School, Sydney, in 1945 he became Acting-Lecturer (in 1946 Lecturer) in Political Science while working also as tutor at his old College, Queen's. He rose to be Reader in his department, retiring Februarary 1981. In July of that year he was awarded the degree of Litt.D. for his published works.
