By the 1880's John Hunter Patterson II, together with his brother Harvey and cousin Thomas controlled 4 million acres in Victoria and New South Wales. While John Hunter looked to the pastoral interests, Harvey, a director in the genesis of the Broken Hill Pty Co Ltd, was responsible for family investments, particularly in mining ventures.
