After schooling at Coburg Primary and Secondary Schools he later completed qualifications as an Associate of the Australian Society of Accountants and became a Fellow of the CPA (Certified Practicing Accountants). He completed an Advanced Course AC45 at the Australian Administrative Staff College at Mt Eliza in1973.
He commenced work in January 1945 at The Bank of Australasia 394 Collins Street, Melbourne. He served in general banking for nine years, followed by five years in the General Managers Office-Chief Accountant and Staff Branch. He resigned in April 1964 to take a position at the University of Melbourne.
He was married in 1959 to Marida Wookey with whom he had four children. He was an active community member in the Anglican church, and later his children’s school community, being on the School Council of Donburn Primary School, coaching basketball and participating in the Scout committee
In April 1964, Maurice was appointed as Project Officer for a new Medical Centre at the University of Melbourne. He became Deputy Buildings Officer in 1967, Executive Officer Buildings 1968, Deputy Controller (Buildings) 1971, and Controller (Buildings) 1973 as Head of Administration - Property and Buildings Department.
In 1985 he became Deputy Vice-Principal (Property). In 1973 this department had a budget of some $20 million, staff of 300 and responsibility for all aspects of property and building at the University. The building program over his 25 years’ service more than doubled the University`s space, including external properties, and cost around $500 million. This development occurred under the direction and in co-operation with Vice-Principal Ray Marginson.
Maurice retired from the University in 1990. After retirement, he and his wife Marida purchased land on the Acheron River at Taggerty, near Alexandra, where they gardened and traveled before moving into Alexandra in 2003. They were both involved in community activities in Taggerty and Alexandra-which resulted in Maurice being awarded an OAM.
