Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsPolitical activistsHistoryPax formed in late 1966 when a group of Melbourne Catholics invited others through 'The Advocate' to join them in Catholic work for peace in response to Pope Paul VI's apparent urging of Catholics to do so. Pax was not explicitly anti-Vietnam war, anti-conscription or pacifist, but set out to study the Church's teaching on peace and war. Nevertheless most of its members were critical of Government policy on Vietnam and opposed conscription. Most also challenged DLP and National Civic Council hold on Catholic opinion. Pax was firmly against nuclear weapons for Australia. In its most active phase 1966-1968 Pax organised home meetings and public conventions. It existed intermittently until 1971.
