In 1933 he entered the University of Vienna to study Art History. He was arrested in Vienna and sent to Dachau concentration camp in 1938. His mother was able to obtain his release with some false documentation and he entered England in 1939 in order to work as a farm labourer in Yorkshire. He was detained again and sent to Australia on the Dunera in 1940 as an 'enemy alien.' He was interned at Hay until 1942 and then served in the Australian forces. He studied at the University of Melbourne from 1943 to 1946, when he completed his honours degree in History, majoring in Italian renaissance history and coming top of his year. In 1950 Philipp became a lecturer in the newly- formed Department of Fine Arts and was promoted to reader in 1964. Among his many distinctions was the Senior Fellowship from the Warburg Institute and the Senior Fellowship of the Australian Association of Humanities. He published many articles, yet his major work was his book on Arthur Boyd. Franz Philipp died in London on 30 May, 1970.
