Between 1965 and his official retirement in 1999 Barrie Pittock worked at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Aspendale Laboratory, a part of the Marine and Atmospheric Research division. In 1999 he became a CSIRO Honorary Fellow. In addition to this scientific work Barrie Pittock has been actively involved in Indigenous Land Rights activism and other social justice causes.
