In 1954-5 he studied for a Diploma of Education, and in 1955-57 completed an MA on An outline political geography of Northern Ireland.
In 1952-54, Prescott was conscripted for National Service, commissioned 2nd lieutentant; then served in the Territorial Army 1954-6 with the rank of lieutenant.
From 1956-61, Prescott was a lecturer in Geography at University College, Ibadan, Nigeria, then part of University of London. In 1957-61 he completed PhD at the University of London, supervised by Professor Gordon East on The evolution of Nigeria’s international and federal boundaries.
Appointed Lecturer in Geography at the University of Melbourne in September 1961, Prescott was promoted to senior lecturer 1965-69, reader 1969-86, and a personal chair 1986-96. He was pro-vice chancellor 1992-4, President of the Academic Board 1995-96, and became Professor Emeritus on his retirement in 1996.
In Australia, Prescott broadcast radio commentaries on the news 1964-1987, and television analyses of national and state elections results on election day, 1964-1987.
His major publications are in the field of political geography, especially maritime boundaries.
