George Prideaux joined the Victorian Navy in 1885 as an armourer's apprentice and served during the Chinese Boxer Rebellion and World War I. He was the Commander of the HMAS Australia when the detachment of naval men on the Western Front occured. After forty-five years of naval service, Prideaux retired in 1939 and died in 1965.
