He was educated at Melbourne Grammar School, later he completed a Bachelor of Mining Engineering at the University of Melbourne and spent his career in the fertiliser industry and at various times he worked for North Broken Hill, Commonwealth Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd, I.C.I.A.N.Z and became a director of the family firm, Cuming Smith & Co. Ltd. and of CSBP & Farmers Ltd. He was president of the Australian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy and of the Council of Footscray Institute of Technology. He was also a member of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Melbourne 1959-1974.
