The standard punchcard was invented by Herman Hollerith as a means of tabulating and processing statistics for various state boards and public departments in the USA in the 1880s. This machine has historic significance in the history of data processing and tabulation as it was an early model of punchcard operating machine of the desktop variety that was used in a corporate environment, circa 1920. Since 1946, punchcard machines were used at NMLA Head Office to assist with bulk addition, calculations and triage of data required in issuing annual valuations and thousands of bonus certificates.
