Its exact function is unknown, but it is probably a lens testing plate, which would have been inserted into the focal plane of a camera lens or other such optical system to test lens performance via a projection method. It is marked with a series of dashed lines in its centre, which may have served as a reticle or illuminated target. Projection testing cannot give a permanent record of lens performance in the way that test chart photography is able to.
