Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsWomen's rights activistsHistoryBon Hull (q.v.) initiated a campaign to save the Queen Victoria Women's Hospital site in Lonsdale Street Melbourne for Victorian women after it was announced that the Hospital was moving from the CBD to the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton. The Constance Stone Collective was formed and at a public meeting on 7 August 1986, it was agreed to lobby the government to recognise women's prior ownership of the site. Nonetheless, the site was sold and all the buildings, except for the three towers fronting Lonsdale Street, were razed.
The Queen Victoria Women's Centre Inc. was established in 1990 to continue the campaign and ensure that at least one tower was designated as a Women's Centre. The expensively renovated Queen Victoria Women's Centre was opened on 15 February 1997 with a mandate that the Centre be financially viable within 12 months. Initially this was untenable for non-profit-making women's groups, however, WIRE moved in late 2004 and other women's groups were planning to take up residence in 2005.
