Murray was founded in 1853 and became one of Australia's largest softgoods wholesalers. Much of their expansion was effected by takeovers of other softgoods companies: Scott Dawson & Stewart of Brisbane and Townsville in 1897, L. Stevenson & Son Ltd of Melbourne and Launceston in 1899 and Henry Bull & Co of Sydney. In 1934 they merged with a major competitor, Goode, Durnut and Co Ltd. The business was wound up in 1971. Reginald Ernest Turner (1898 to 1988) worked for D & W Murray Ltd, becoming Managing Director.
