He emigrated from his father's farm on 21 December 1857, sailing for Australia aboard the 'Sultana', which arrived at Melbourne on 30 March 1858. He left immediately for Bendigo, and settled in Happy Valley where he did contract work with a horse and dray. In March 1863 he married Grace Wills of Bendigo. He purchased shares in mining companies, and on receiving good dividends became a speculator, giving less time to contract work. J.B. Davies was a member of the Bendigo Stock Exchange. He died on 1 June 1906.
