He commenced work at the age of 14 in various factories, and commenced an apprenticeship as a turner in 1939. His apprenticeship was interrupted during the War when he joined the Australian Army, being placed in a 'Field Brigade, Mobile Workshop' initially with the 15th Brigade. He was eventually transfered to New Guinea where his unit provided repairs for all types of equipment used in the war effort. After the war, he completed his apprenticeship and, due to the housing shortage, moved to Perth with his family. He was a member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union .
