He then went on to the Universities of Melbourne and Harvard. A lifelong teacher and writer of history he lectured in History and Sociology at La Trobe University, Melbourne and from 1970-90 held the Max Crawford Chair of History at the University of Melbourne. Emeritus Professor at Melbourne since 1991, he was also Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research at the Australian National University in Canberra.
