Graduating from RMIT with a Diploma of Art he was awarded a scholarship with the Royal College of Art in London in 1958. After his studies Devlin returned to Australia as an inspector of art schools. In 1964, he won a competition to design the first decimal coinage for Australia and has since designed coinage for a number of countries. In 1965 Devlin moved to London and became well known for his unique style. 1982 saw his appointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II and in 2000 he designed commemorative coins for the Sydney Olympics.
