From 1957 to 1961 he was Aitchison-Myer Travelling Scholar at Magdalen College, graudating B Phil European History (Oxon) 1959, and Rome Scholar in Mediaeval Studies at the British School at Rome 1959-1961. He was appointed Lecturer at Melbourne in 1961, was History Department chairman 1982-1984, and retired in 1997. His magnum opus was 'Tyranny under the mantle of St Peter: Pope Paul II and Bologna (Turnhout, Belgium, 2002). Ian Robertson died 6 January 2004.
