On his return to Australia he worked as a journalist, then joined the Army's Educational Service as a member of staff and later as an editor of "Salt" the Army's educational journal. He returned to journalism from 1947 to 1950. He married Gwynn Rivett (nee Terry) in 1948. After a period of teaching in London from 1951 -1953, he joined the University of Melbourne as Senior Tutor in English. Here he remained until his retirement, rising to a Readership in 1974. Hume Dow was an active member of several professional bodies and committees in the University.
