In 1976 he joined the Communist Party of Australia and moved to Adelaide, becoming involved with the ATMOEA as a bus driver. He moved to Victoria in 1978, becoming a prominent rank and file member, delegate and organiser in the ATMOEA. He moved to ADSTE as an organiser in 1987 and subsequently into the MEWU on amalgamation. Throughout this time he was on the State Committee and the National Committee of the CPA and active in local campaigns.
