That year the firm commenced manufacturing internal combustion engines, notably the Austral Oil Engine. In 1927 Ronaldson Bros. & Tippett Ltd. diversified into diesel engines but was hit early by the onset of the depression. Recovery was aided by a Defence contract in 1932 to generate power in Darwin and Defence production continued during the war. Postwar expansion led to the building of a new iron foundry and in 1948 the firm became a public company. In 1970 it was collapsed on the stock exchange and sold up, seeing the emergence of the Merbank Corporation.
