In 1842 he helped to found to the newspaper Nation; in 1844 he was convicted of sedition though the House of Lords set aside the sentence. Emigrating to Victoria in 1855, he was almost immediately elected to Parliament and was Premier from 1871-1873. On retiring from politics in 1880 he took up residence in Nice in France where he wrote extensively on Irish history and Irish and Colonial politics. He was knighted in 1873 and died in 1903.
