Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsClubs, social and culturalHistoryThe Caledonian Society of Victoria was formed at a meeting at the Mechanics' Institute on 6 April 1868, its members to be of Scottish birth or parentage. By the late 1880s it had over 500 members and assisted new arrivals, Scottish widows and the unemployed. It also supported sports meetings and established a pipe band and junior pipe band. The first organisation ran into difficulties over lack of funds and was reconstructed on 12 June 1884 "on a more workable basis". The society was awarded a Royal Charter in February 1921 but again met difficult times in the 1930s. The society later became defunct and possibly merging with another organisation.
