In 1863 he was joined by William Tulloch and formed Royal Standard Brewery trading as Tulloch McLaren & Co until 1890 when the name was changed to Tulloch & Sons. Branches were established in Melbourne and Geelong. The brewery amalgamated with James Coghlan's Phoenix Brewery to form Coghlan & Tulloch's Ballarat Brewing Co Pty Ltd. The breweries continued to operate separately until 1911. The merged business operated until 1936 when the business converted to a limited company. In 1958 the brewing assets were sold to Carlton & United Brewery.
