After matriculating he volunteered with the Australian Airforce Corp and saw active service from 1918 to 1919. When East returned he enrolled at the University of Melbourne and graduated C.B.E. in 1922. In the same year East was appointed Engineer with the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. Promoted to Chairman in 1934, East remained wqith the Commission until his retirement in 1965. A member of numerous committees and recipient of many honours and awards, Lewis East was also a member of the River Murray Commission and Snowy Mountains Council.
