Its objectives included the promotion of research and expert discussion of economic problems and the publication of the results of research conducted by the Society. The University of Melbourne’s Professor Douglas Copland (later Sir Douglas) was the founding President of the Society and first editor of the Society’s journal The Economic Record.
The Society's successor is the Economic Society of Australia which follows a federal structure.
