After much debate within the University about which Faculty was the most appropriate to run the surveying course, it commenced in the Engineering Faculty in 1949. During the formative period of the course, the syllabus was much the same as for Engineering, and then diverged after the second year. The development stage of the course involved the cooperation of many notable academic staff: Dr RT Patton and Prof GW Leeper for the botony/ecology part; Prof Zelman Cowan for property law; Prof Martin (Atomic energy fame) for Physics; and Dr Brown for mathematics. It was also necessary to introduce the subject 'photogrammetry', a discipline with little expertise in Australia post war. Prof Thornton Smith consulted with the international academics Prof Thompson (UK) and Prof Zeller (Switzerland) to produce the Australian syllabus. Equipment was scarce and the University had to rely on the cooperation of the government departments which had it. All of these influences can be found in the notes and syllabus taken by Mr Edwards.
