He entered the meat industry in 1936 and became active in the Australasian Meat Industry Employees' Union. He was elected Organiser in 1943 and became Victorian Branch Secretary in 1947, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. He was a long term member of the CPA and active in community arts and workers' health projects in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray. He was the first Arts Officer of the Victorian Trades Hall Council c.1975 (q.v.). He died of cancer in 1988.
