He began his career as an agronomist with the Northern Territory Administration in 1971. He later became Managing Director of international consulting companies, Coffey-MPW Ltd and MPW Australia, where he was respon- sible for large development projects in 60 countries, mostly in Asia where he lived for 20 years. He became Professor of Agriculture at the former Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture in 1995 and since 1998, Dean and CEO of the Institute of Land and Food Resources at the University of Melbourne.
