Hugh Gordon was Slater's brother-in-law, who joined the firm when its workload increased. The firm predominantly represented workers and trade unions. After Gordon's death on active service during WW11 and Slater's appointment as Australian ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1942, Ted Hill became the firm's manager, remaining with them until 1948, during which time he widely expanded the firm's industrial practice.
