She worked as a psychiatric nurse until moving to Australia at the age of twenty-five. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Footscray Institute of Technology in 1985. Whilst in Melbourne Ferrall-Heath was actively involved in student politics and the women's liberation movement, including the Women's Liberation Switchboard and Women for Survival. She was twice arrested, once for trespass at the 1983 Pine Gap Women's Peace Camp, and again during a protest at the 1984 Cockburn Sound Action. After moving to Sydney in 1987 and working at the Rape Crisis Centre, Ferrall-Heath returned to New Zealand and further studies in Dunedin.
